Yandere Simulator: Don’t Let Senpai Notice You!
Have you ever liked another person but you’re always too shy to confess how you feel? Do you always watch your object of affection from a distance, making sure that nobody else gets close? Have you ever thought about murdering your rivals in love? If you have, chances are that you are a Yandere!
Even if you are not, YandereDev’s Yandere Simulator will let you play as a senpai-obsessed highschool girl who will do anything to eliminate everyone else that will stand in the way of her love while maintaining the guise of an innocent student.
The word Yandere comes from the words “yanderu” (to be sick) and “deredere” (lovestruck). A yandere is a type of character (often portrayed as female) who is genuinely sweet, romantic, kind and caring but is at the same time psychotic, brutal, or crazy. This psychotic behavior is often tied to the character’s feelings for her love interest and is often displayed as extreme acts of cruelty such as: killing off the character’s rivals in love (often in secret), causing harm to her love interest so that the character can nurse him/her back to health, or even kidnapping the love interest to prevent her rivals from stealing him/her.
Yandere Simulator puts the player in the shoes of Yandere-chan, a high school girl who has a fatal crush on her Senpai. The game is not yet finished and is only 6% complete during the time of this writing. The game begins at Yandere-chan’s room where you can select what panties to wear and look at pictures you’ve taken.
Upon exiting the room, you are able to visit the basement or go to school. Visiting the basement will allow you to look at a love rival that you have kidnapped. Going to school will present you with the bulk of the gameplay. In one of his videos, YandereDev explains that:
“Yandere Simulator is not a dating simulator. It’s not about romancing Senpai. It’s about being a stalker. And it’s about sabotaging his love life from the shadows. You should eliminate your rivals without letting Senpai know you exist in the first place. Yandere-chan will confess her love to Senpai when the time is right, once all her rivals are eliminated. Until then, DON’T LET SENPAI NOTICE YOU!”
A day in school is divided into three phases; Before Class Starts, Lunchtime, and After School. During the “Before Class Starts” phase, Yandere-chan arrives at school and is able to interact with other students. At first, interaction is limited only to giving a compliment and saying goodbye, but by raising Yandere-chan’s reputation, other interactions will become available such as asking for favors. Reputation is enhanced by being a good student and by being nice to others.
YandereDev already put weapons in the courtyard for players who want to see how Yandere-chan can kill other students and dispose of their bodies in the nearby incinerator. Players can also go to class and focus on a specific subject to unlock more ways of killing or manipulating other students.
Senpai is also present in the game and players can identify him by using “Yandere Vision”, a feature that allows Yandere-chan to see her Senpai and love rivals clearly, or if the screen becomes pink and Yandere-chan starts acting cutesy, that means that Senpai is in her immediate proximity.
The players can use Yandere-chan’s camera to take pictures of Senpai, or test out the weapons that YandereDev put in the school yard if they want to go on a killing spree. Should the player choose to start murdering students indiscriminately, Yandere-chan’s sanity meter will begin to drop causing students to be afraid of her on sight. Sanity can be restored by laughing hysterically. If any of the students who possess the “Teacher’s Pet” trait succeed in escaping from Yandere-chan, an incredibly capable teacher will arrive and apprehend her, leading to Yandere-chan’s expulsion from school.
From the looks of it, Yandere Simulator is still in the very early stages of conceptualization and development. There’s plenty of room for improvement, but the concept is interesting and entertaining, albeit a little dark and twisted.
